Overflow
This week I have been thinking about how I live in the overflow of the blessing that was poured out on those who went before me. I never knew any of my grandparents personally, but they instilled values and faith in my parents and they in turn taught me. What my husband Bob and I believe, we instructed our children and now I see them walking it out and passing their values on to their children. I now have three great-grandchildren and two more on the way! Little ones who are being taught about God, His mercy, love, and faithfulness by their parents. They are learning other things too like how to get along and help others, how to fish, how to live life in general.
2 Timothy 2:2 “And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.”
Whether it is family members or those who we interact with daily, we are consciously or unconsciously sharing our values through our attitudes and actions to those around us. It is our responsibility and our privilege to pass on our principles and knowledge of God and life to others.
When my children were young, we used to talk about events at school and in their day. I would tell them, “I am your filter.” We would talk about things they observed. My job was to help them sort out and understand through a godly worldview the things that went on around them and they were a part of everyday.
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” Deuteronomy 6:5-7
We hear a lot about mentoring and coaching these days. We can have coaches in many areas – exercise, nutrition, business, life, sports, and faith. We all have something more to learn in all areas of life, but we also have things we can pass on to others. It is both a privilege and a responsibility to be reaching forward in our own lives but also reaching out to those around us to encourage and lend them a hand along the way – to overflow onto other lives.
What is one skill you like to share with others?
Are you comfortable sharing your faith?
