My Anchor
God’s Word is an anchor we can trust. It is enduring and full of amazing promises. There are between 3,000 and 8,000 promises, depending on which theologian is counting.
Fifty-seven years ago, I went to talk to my pastor and ask him to officiate the wedding of Bob and me. My pastor looked genuinely concerned. I would turn nineteen years old in a couple of weeks and I wanted to marry a guy who had just turned twenty-one. Bob had returned one month earlier from military service in the Vietnam War. Plus, the pastor knew that Bob was just new in his faith, and we would move out of state and away from my home church and family. He thought this was a big mistake and said I needed to be very sure and know it was God leading us. So, I told him I would pray some more and get back to him.
When I prayed, God gave me a promise from Jeremiah 32:39 “And I will give them one heart, and one way that they may fear me forever, for the good of them, and of their children.” I had no idea what was wrapped up in that promise. All I knew was that I had an answer for my pastor. When I told him that I felt God spoke this verse to me, he accepted it, and we planned the wedding within a month.
Bob and I were so different in so many ways! There was a lot of adjustment on both our parts. Thankfully, we were young and flexible – not set in our ways. But the core of our values and desires were the same. God – family – serve others. Bob was always better at serving others than me; but I kept things steady at home. God had a lot of work to do in both of us.
Now I look back at that verse today in utter amazement! All I can say is “Wow God! You really did it!” Way beyond anything I could have imagined! God are still rippling the effect of that promise not only to our children but to our children’s children! I see God’s favor on the little great-grandchildren also! I am very humbled by God’s faithfulness and goodness to us!
“For all of God’s promises find their “yes” of fulfillment in Him. And as His “yes” and our “amen” ascend to God, we bring Him glory! 2 Corinthians 1:20 Passion Translation
